Serving up Samba

I can’t help myself. I like challenges—and I’ve picked a pretty big one this time. I really want our church to have a server. I want a centralized share point. I want to network the printers. We need a place to back up information. I need to control various permissions (including internet access).

However, I can’t talk them into purchasing one. Honestly, our network isn’t big enough to really justify the expense yet. The only way I’m going to get a “good” server is if I can prove why we can’t live without one.

The best way to prove its worth is to create dependence.

It finally dawned on me that I had options. Linux is your friend. I did some research and found out Samba will act as a domain controller. It’s really come a long way over the years. So I’m gonna try that route. We are small enough that if this flops it won’t hurt much.

The biggest challenge for me is the fact I have no stinking idea what I’m doing. I know nothing about how to set up a server nor do I know what I need to study. Plus, Linux isn’t the most intuitive platform to learn on. So if nothing else, hopefully I’ll learn something.
