Our first IT upgrade! –HELP!

Finally, the time has come. I have a file server set up. I know how to run it. I know how to secure it. I know how to back it up. The time has finally come to ‘centralize’ NMCC’s network.

Before I can begin, I need a router. Because the network has only been used for internet so far, we haven’t used one. One is in place, and is routing, but it’s the ISP’s and because the connection is wireless we can’t have access to it. I guess they think we would steal wep keys and distribute them or something. Nonetheless, the time has come for us to control our own network.

I need suggestions. We are saving up for a huge technology bump later this year, and I don’t want to distract them from that goal. Nor will they stray from that goal. I had to work hard to get them working on that goal! Anyway, it’s time. We need this. Even though this is an important piece of hardware, we don’t want to spend a lot of money at this point. Our network is still very small.
My question for the geeks out there, what is a good router for our starting point?

I’d get a good DLink router for now … they work well and aren’t a lot of $$ esp if you can get a rebate. Then save up for a “real” router down the road.
I run DLink at home and I’ve got 2 small biz clients running on DLink routers … for a small amount of users they work fine.
I’d also consider placing a switch in front of the router rather than using whatever switch functionality of the router. The less things the router has to do the happier it will be.

Do you plan to use DHCP from the router or the server?

I haven’t decided on DHCP. I’m a static IP kinda person. I’ve just always done it that way. I like the control. If I do use DHCP, it will be from the router.

The router will just be routing. I might use the VLAN feature, but I don’t plan to use it as the network switch. We already have a switch in place to do that. If I get real ambitious, I might play with the VPN stuff, but we don’t need it (yet).

I looked at a pretty good Linksys I liked. It was the Linksys rv0041. I couldn’t find any reviews on it. I use a D-Link at home and I like it, but it’s quirky. Not all the features work well. I was leaning away from D-Link but I might at least look at similar D-Link compared to the Linksys.

The Linksys is affordable, but still a little more than I wanted to spend. I like the features though so I might suck it up and spend the little extra if I don’t find another/better option.

I left out a link to the Linksys . My bad.

How many PC’s you got? I’d suggest just getting one of the basic under $100 soho units … and save up for something like a low end Sonicwall down the road.
You can always just pass VPN traffic through the router to your server if you decide to use VPN…which at least for you the admin I’d highly recommend.
With VPN and Dameware I can remote control almost everything at our church…even the phone system :-)

Our network is currently less than 10 PC’s. I am expecting a growth of possibly 3-5 more this year alone. We are implementing the file server, which will have private shares, private group shares, and a public share.

I wanted vlans so I could control various functions. We would like to limit who can have internet access. Plus, we would like to offer an open wireless internet connection, seperate from our file sharing network. We would of course, filter this internet access for inappropriate things.

Ideas or thoughts?

Ok, I’m dumb. A VLAN, although very interesting, doesn’t actually do what I thought it does. So that’s no longer important.

You’re supposed to watch when I’m being dumb and call me on it. :)

Ok, so the fact of the matter is, if the router can handle say… 20 PC’s, It will work well for us at our current and expected need for a few years.

After some review, I did find a dlink I liked.

What do you think about this one?
