Big Brother Strikes Back

I had 3 help desk tickets yesterday (I knew I shouldn’t have installed that Help Desk Script:). Thankfully though, none of them were server related. After 1 full day of server usage there were no issues to report. It was a good start.

My next project is logging. Once again, I need help. We would like to monitor (not necessarily restrict) internet usage. With ~ 5 community PC accessing the network, we wanted a way to track what was going on. I think the server is secure, (although never secure enough, I know) so I just wanted a way to know what was coming into our network from the outside. It would be nice to know what’s happening on the inside too, but Samba logging leaves something to be desired.

I’ve looked at sniffers and proxies and managed switches and firewalls…ahhhhh! I have no idea how to go about this one.

So I guess my question is how do you do it?
