random question #1

As a “get to know the geeks” kinda thing, I have random questions I plan to post from time asking for your feedback.  This has no purpose at all other than interesting discussion.  Well, I think it’s interesting anyway.
Here is the first question… Do you run a antivirus on your personal PC?

I have heard some uber geeks say they are smart enough and they don’t have to use one on their personal PC, yet they do install one on the more communial PC’s in their home.

So, do you run an antivirus?  I have to say I really don’t pay much attention to mine.  I do run AVG on my XP’s, but naturally with the Mac and Linux boxes I have no need for one.

Plus, I’m smart enough to know better (I know all the rules), so it’s been years since I’ve actually had a virus.

Feedback appreciated and welcomed.

At home I run Mac and Linux, so no. Especially since Symantec recently caused security problems on OS X instead of fixing them.

In my opinion anyone who doesn’t run anti-virus on a PC or MAC deserves to get a virus.

AVG free on my personal home gear. Symantec Corp Edition on all GCC PC’s.

I don’t have a personal PC running Windows, so no, I don’t run any anti-virus software at work or at home. I use Ubuntu Linux on any PC I will personally be using.

On my kids’ computers I run AVG.

At Crossroads, we recently switched to F-Prot for all Windows machines. Our Macs and Linux boxen don’t use any anti-virus.

Jason,

Seriously, what protection does a Mac need? Between a hardware router/firewall and being smart enough not to run as a Administrator, the Mac is very safe.

Restricted accouts are much, much less bothersome on Mac than they are in Windows (and in my opinion, even in Linux).

There are already proof of concept Mac viruses. Once it becomes profitable for people to make a Mac viruses Macs will get hit regardless of how “secure” the claims are…it’s only a matter of time
