Office 2007 a home run. Vista? meh… take a base
I was lucky enough to score a free copy of Vista and Office 2007. I was also able to see a demonstration of both.
I was very under-whelmed with Vista. As a geek, I like a lot of the stuff it offers. But as a professional, I won’t be able to provide all the eye candy to my users. Although I do like some of the recovery, imaging, and administrative access they are providing with Vista.
Office 2007 on the other hand is AWESOME! I’m a huge fan.
I’m still getting used to the ribbon, but I’m getting there. I have always been a spreadsheet junkie and the new Excel just feeds that addiction.
I’ve done very little as far as development on a Windows machine, but I see a lot of potential with the new Office. The coolest thing is that the data in an Office document is now structured! This is awesome news for a programmer. Up until now, it has been a pain in my rear to dynamically create anything in Office.
Let me share with you what made my jaw drop. Take any Office 2007 document (.docx) and change the .docx to .zip. Then open the zip. Structure, baby!
And the geeks rejoice.
